See the Arts in Action at LMS
In addition, the students have opportunities to engage in creative service activities that benefit the Lexington community. For example, Lexington Montessori students, guided by Jill Coldiron, the LMS art teacher and a local artist, participated in a project to create ceramic tiles that are part of a mural at the entrance of the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital.
Other examples of students’ participation in creative endeavors and community service include our annual ‘Night of the Arts’ choral concert and art gallery at Victorian Square, as well as collections for local charities. At LMS,we believe that exciting opportunities like this have the potential to ignite and inspire a life-long interest in civic engagement and responsibility, as well as an enjoyment of the arts.
Field trips are an important component of the Montessori experience. Students attend concerts, plays, science and environmental activities, and historical sites that are carefully chosen to enrich the current units of study. Children in both the primary and elementary classes participate in trips during the school day; in addition, the children in the elementary program attend an overnight trip each year. These excursions are a great opportunity for parents to volunteer as drivers and to join with teachers as chaperone's.
All students participate in recess daily. Children in Kindergarten and the Elementary program also have weekly physical education classes, most typically at off-site local venues with trained personnel; PE activities throughout the year include gymnastics, swimming, basketball, martial arts, dance, skating and games.
