History of Lexington montessori school

Lexington Montessori School (LMS) is an independent non-profit. It was founded in 1980, primarily through the efforts of Ben and Susan Magedanz. LMS was the first Montessori school in Lexington to offer a full-day program. In 1988, LMS added a lower elementary classroom for 1st to 3rd grade students. We added an upper elementary classroom for 4th through 6th grade in 1992.

Having previously taught at LMS from 1992-96, RandiLynn Tucker moved back to Lexington and returned to LMS as a teacher in 2007. She became our Head of School in 2008, making her our longest-serving Head of School. In 2022, Ms. Tucker was featured in TOPS Magazine—the premier publication in Central Kentucky—for her leadership and commitment to child success.

Our current enrollment is approximately 70 students. Located close to the University of Kentucky campus and downtown, LMS serves families throughout Lexington and surrounding areas. The composition of our student body and school community continues to reflect the diversity of the greater Lexington community.

We discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being.
